Information for Parents of New Cub Scouts

Congratulations on your son(s) joining the wonderful world of Cub Scouts!  This page will help you learn about various aspects of Scouting and of the Pack.  You can find additional information on the Baltimore Area Council web site.  If there's a topic you'd like to see addressed here, please let us know using the "Contact us" link above.

                                                                                                       Meetings
Weekly Den meetings take place at the ACS Building on Chisholm Road.  Monthly Pack meetings take place at Pershing Hill Elementary School off 29th Division Rd. in Meuse Forest; see the calendar for dates and times.  Here's a map to help you find them!

You can purchase all of these items--plus anything you could ever want associated with Scouting--at the Scout Shop at 7502 Connelley Drive in Hanover, near BWI Airport (see map).  The shop is open 9:00-5:30 Monday-Friday (until 7:00 on Wednesday) and 10:00-3:00 on Saturday.  Directions from Fort Meade are:

  • Primary Route: Exit the Reese Rd gate. Go straight on MD 174 for ~3 miles. Turn left on MD 170 (at the McDonald’s and the CVS). At the first light after crossing under MD 100, turn right on to MD 176. Turn right at the next light.
  • Secondary Route: Exit the Rockenbach Rd gate. Go straight on MD 713. Turn right at Arundel Mills Mall. At the first light after crossing under MD 100, turn right on to MD 176. After crossing MD 170, turn right at the next light.
The Scout Shop is at the end of the strip mall on your right.  The staff is extremely helpful; if you go in and tell them you need to get a uniform for your Scout, they'll help you get everything you need!

                                                                                       Belt Loops and Activity Pins
The Academics and Sports program gives Cub Scouts extra activities to do.  In academics subjects and sports, Cub Scouts learn new skills, become better scholars, learn sportsmanship, and have fun.  They can get to know a sport or an academic subject that's new to them—maybe astronomy, chess, computers, or science; or golf, gymnastics, ice skating, or tennis, to name a few of the subjects and sports that are in the program.
Your Scout earns a belt loop to wear with his uniform when he completes three specific requirements for each Academics or Sports activity.  He can take part in three ways: (1) by himself or with his family, (2) in his Den or Pack, or (3) in school. Once he has earned the belt loop, he can stop.  But if he wants to do more with the activity, he may complete extra requirements to earn a pin.
There are three ways to see which subjects are available and what the requirements are:
1.  Click here for the list of sports and academic subjects.
2.  Download the complete list of subjects and requirements.
3.  Download the Academics and Sports Pin Tracker.  Not only does this have all the requirements, but it also allows you to track what your Scout has accomplished!
If your Scout completes the requirements for a belt loop or pin outside of a Den meeting, let your Den Leader know so he/she can ensure it gets awarded at the next Pack meeting.
